Customs VS Cats

In the next couple of posts, I will be shifting the attention more to tigers. Now, I was listening to this author giving this speech about his books (he writes wildlife adventure stories), and he was saying that one of the main reasons tigers are being poached goes as follows: The traditional Chinese medicine uses every part of the tiger body, and so Chinese come to villages in the North of India and offer the residents BIG bucks if they kill a  tiger without damaging its coat (so they club it to death). The villagers agree, as it takes care of the problem of their livestock being hunted as well. I understand that it is their traditional way of making medicine but this has got to stop. True, the tiger population has grown with the increase of reserves, but those not in safety are (of course) in real danger! There is no real way to stop a problem like this. Alternatives can be suggested other than the tiger's parts, but it is hard to break traditions...

More On Lions Of Gir

I was reading an article and it said that there are too many lions in Gir, and their problem is space. They have even taken to living on the beach! Check out the article here:

'Ten thousand years ago, their habitat ranged from the Mediterannean to the wilds of India. They now cling precariously to their modern habitat, an impossibly small domain Gir National Park. A rough census at the time of independence shows about 250 lions, the 2010 census quotes 411. This may sound like good news but this large number is ironically the main cause for concern. It may be odd to think of the Asiatic lion as endangered, but the truth is that Gir is way overpopulated and needs quite a few of its lions relocated urgently. Ignorance and false pride from the state goverment's part can have disastrous consequences as the sanctuary is proving to small for the big cats. With the shortage of territory to command, lions are fast moving out of the sanctuary. Some of them have even taken to the beach! To survive the lions have to put up with factors such as acute inbreeding given that the 400 plus population has been said to have been derived from around a dozen individuals."

Should we petition for more space for the Lions?

More About Lions Of Gir

"The problem facing the lion in Gir is space. With territory in short supply, lions prowl the edges of the forest, often falling into one of the 8000 uncovered wells surrounding Gir - that are virtual death traps for the lions. Poaching is another threat - lions are often killed for their claws. Living in a single park, a single epidemic could mean extinction for the lion. 'All lions are in one space, if anything were to happen to these animals it would be a catastrophe,' said Wildlife Conservation Society-India Program Ravi Chellam." I found this on http://ibnlive.in.com/news/lions-of-gir-indias-most-endangered-big-cat/111422-3.html

THIS IS REALLY BAD! I think we should start an online petition. Anyone any more ideas??

Ask the youth: What do you think is happening to Cats worldwide??

"They are dying because people are using them for their uses and treating them badly."

"They are becoming extinct because people are using their fur and body parts for medicine."

"I think so people are using them for bad uses. Humans have enough but they use their fur for carpets and clothes. They are our friends, we should love them."

"There aren't a lot left."

"I think people are using them uneccesarily and I think that we are all God's creation. Cats need more freedom."

I had the honor to ask these awesome kids what they thought. They are all saying HIIIIII!!!!!!!!

Lions of Gir

Hey guys! I was reading this online newspaper and according to it, 30 of the Lions of Gir in Gujurat have died in the past year! Less than 700 of those lions remain in count. Can you believe this?! I'm still trying to find out how it happened...I was talking to some people that have visited the reserve, and they all said they haven't seen a single lion there. We have to do something. Anyone any ideas?? I was thinking of an online petition...
